In recent years, more U.S. universities have stopped requiring or considering standardized test scores such as the SAT or ACT for undergraduate admissions. Under this trend, the materials that can best showcase a student’s academic ability, learning attitude, passion for the chosen major, and preparation include high school transcripts, AP/IB course and exam scores, letters of recommendation, and application essays.
Among these, the application essay is the part where students have the greatest freedom to fully display their personality, strengths, and potential. It not only complements what grades cannot reflect but can also play a decisive role in helping an applicant stand out from the competition.
Today, admissions officers evaluate more than just academic scores. They look for essays that clearly and authentically demonstrate the applicant’s passion for the chosen major and sustained engagement, their attitude toward challenges and problem-solving, and the depth and impact of their activities. Simply listing extracurriculars is no longer enough—officers want to see the thought process, personal growth, and meaningful outcomes behind each experience.
However, many students fall into common pitfalls when writing their essays. Some rely on fixed templates, resulting in generic and impersonal writing. Others borrow too heavily from examples or even plagiarize, a risk made even more serious by the widespread use of AI-assisted plagiarism detection. Many also write in vague terms, lacking the concrete details and genuine emotion that make a story compelling.
To make an essay a true strength in the application, students should start early and avoid last-minute writing. They should choose stories that reflect their values, abilities, and passion, and bring them to life with vivid details such as specific settings, people, and numbers. Multiple rounds of revision will help improve both logic and language. Most importantly, the essay must be original and authentic—your story is unique, and only you can tell it.
